Fall date ideas for the short, good weeks of autumn

Fall is the easiest season to plan a date in, and the easiest one to waste. The good stuff runs on a short clock: orchards close for the year, foliage peaks for a week or two, and haunted attractions sell out in October. These fall date ideas are sorted by how much of the season they need.

A quick note on timing. Sunset is earlier every week, so plan outdoor dates for the afternoon and keep the evening for something warm. And if you see something you want to do, put it on the calendar now. In November it'll be gone.

Get outside while it lasts

These work best on clear afternoons in October.

  1. Apple picking or a pumpkin patch

Go on a weekday morning or right at opening on a weekend to skip the crowds. Bring cash for the farm stand, and plan on cider donuts whether or not you meant to.

  2. A corn maze at dusk

Some farms run flashlight nights in the maze after dark. Go in the last hour of daylight so you start in the light and finish in the dark, and bring a jacket since it gets cold fast.

  3. A foliage drive with an endpoint

Check a local fall color report and pick a small town an hour or so away as your destination. Leave by early afternoon, eat lunch in the town, and take a different road home.

  4. A golden-hour hike to an overlook

Pick a short trail with a view and time it so you reach the top about 30 minutes before sunset. Pack a headlamp for the walk down, because it gets dark sooner than you think.

Only in October

  1. A ghost tour or haunted house

Popular haunted attractions and walking tours sell out on October weekends, so book a week ahead or go on a Thursday. Decide in advance who's allowed to hold whose arm.

  2. A pumpkin carving contest for two

Each of you carves a pumpkin with a theme the other picks, like your landlord or a childhood pet. Roast the seeds with salt and whatever spice is in the cabinet.

  3. A $15 thrift-store costume challenge

Split up in a thrift store with fifteen dollars and twenty minutes each to put together a costume for the other person. Wear them to a Halloween event or just to dinner.

  4. Día de Muertos events

In late October and early November, many cities, especially in Mexico and the southwestern US, host altars, parades and markets for Día de Muertos. Go in the evening when the candles are lit, and be a respectful guest at what's a meaningful tradition for many families.

Warm and cozy evenings

  1. A fire pit night

If you don't have a fire pit, some parks and campgrounds have bookable fire rings. Bring s'mores supplies, two mugs and a thermos of something hot.

  2. A soup or ramen crawl

Pick two or three places known for one bowl each and share a small portion at every stop. Cold nights make this one better, and it's an easy way to try a new neighborhood.

  3. A cider or wine tasting

Cideries and wineries are in harvest season and often have fall releases. Book a tasting for mid-afternoon, and decide who's driving before you go.

  4. The last outdoor movie of the season

Many towns run their final outdoor screenings in early October. Bring a real blanket, not a beach towel, and a thermos.

Small-town and game-day fun

  1. A harvest festival

Small-town fall festivals usually have local food, music and crafts for little or no entry fee. Arrive early for parking and give yourselves a small budget for the craft tables.

  2. A local football game

A high school or college game on a Friday or Saturday night is cheap, loud and full of fall atmosphere. Buy something from the concession stand to support the team, and sit up high so you can see the whole field.

Catch the season while it's here

The tricky part of fall dates is that so much of what's good is temporary. Wing looks at what's on near you this week and checks every stop on Google Maps, so you get a plan built from what's actually open right now, not a list of things that closed last weekend.

Tell Wing your city and what you both enjoy, set the budget, and you'll get one plan with start times, walking time between stops, a cost range, and why each stop fits. This Week, which shows current things happening nearby, is free to use.

Questions

What are good fall date ideas for couples?
Anything that leans into the season: orchards, corn mazes, foliage drives, harvest festivals and fire pit nights. Pair one outdoor afternoon activity with a warm dinner or drink afterward and you've got a full date.
When is the best time for apple picking?
It depends on where you live and the variety, but many orchards run from late summer into October. Check the orchard's website or social pages before you go, since crops can finish early. Weekday mornings are the least crowded.
What can you do on a cold fall night?
Go somewhere warm with a seasonal twist: a soup crawl, a cider tasting, or a fire pit with a thermos. Haunted attractions and ghost tours are also a good fit for October evenings.
Can Wing find fall events near us?
Wing looks at what's on near you this week when it builds a plan, and This Week shows current things happening nearby. It doesn't buy tickets, so you'll book anything that needs one yourself.
